If you are a UK taxpayer, the value of your gift can be increased by 25% under the Gift Aid scheme at no extra cost to you. This means a donation of £10 could be worth an extra £2.50 to the children.
Charities take your donation (which is money you’ve already paid tax on), and then reclaim tax on its ‘gross’ equivalent.
In practice, this means that if you give £10 to charity using Gift Aid, that gift is worth £12.50.
UK Taxpayers can tick the box, as long as they pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April one year to 5 April the next) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that we will reclaim on your gifts for that tax year.
If you pay tax at the higher rate, you can reclaim tax relief on your gross donation at 20% (i.e. the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40% and the basic rate at 20%).
